Temane Thermal Power Plant, Mozambique. Construction of a new 450 MW gas-fired power plant and transmission line has been launched this week at Temane in Inhambane Province in Mozambique. The project will supply power to EDM (Electricity of Mozambique / Electricidade de Moçambique) .
The natural gas for the project will be supplied from the Pande Temane fields.
Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world with a GDP of USD $475 per capita in 2018. Expanding the countries energy infrastructure is necessary to improve access to electricity and encourage industrial development. By 2018 only 31 percent of the population had access to electricity. The Mozambique government’s National Electrification Strategy aims to connect 70 percent of the population to the grid by 2030 and provide the remaining 30 percent with off-grid energy solutions.
The EIA for the project identified positive and negative project impacts with mitigation proposed for the latter. Some project benefits will be local in the vicinity of the power plant but will accrue mainly to downstream users of the electricity.
